An experience of the Sound and Music Summer School
By: Rey
I am Rey, an electronic producer from mid Wales. I applied to the Sound and Music Summer school electronic music group because I wanted to improve my production of electronic music. The Summer School was a residential course which took place at the Purcell School, and it was definitely one of the most influential weeks I’ve had in music education compared to high school and college.
When I was there I learnt a lot, for example; the basics of Ableton, synthesis and a brief history of drum machines. Through the span of the week you write your own track and at the end of the week you perform your own track. Whilst I was creating my song I was able to collaborate with the other students and had all the help to make a good track by the end. When I performed it was great to get feedback from the audience and see what people thought of my track. It was also interesting to hear the other groups do their performances too.
In the week there are activities to settle you in and to learn about music. There also are taster sessions where you get to try out the other classes such as instrumental, jazz, vocal, film and cross cultural. I learnt a different range of musical knowledge from them as well.
I met such a diverse range of people who were all enthusiastic about music and some good mates as well. I also got an understanding of other musical genres and how they were written as well. The sound and music team were so supportive and so were the tutors. The environment is very inclusive and immersive. The opportunity to go is definitely %100 worth it as it is such an incredible experience.
Applications for the Sound and Music Summer School usually open in January each year. Find out more on the Sound and Music website.
